Italy

At a glance:

  • No national policies, laws, or guidance on repatriation
  • No meaningful way to engage with Italy on the issue of repatriation at the moment

Overview

There is very little indication of Italy’s attitude or approach to repatriation, outside of their own efforts to reclaim recently trafficked items from other countries and museums, such as the Louvre.

The country has also recently established a new museum in Rome, called the ‘Museum of Rescued Art’. The museum rotates the display of over 200 artefacts that are believed to have been stolen from cultural sites across the country and trafficked in the US.

At the moment, there seems to be no meaningful way to engage with Italy on the issue of repatriation.
