Portugal

At a glance:

  • No national laws, policies, or guidance on repatriation
  • No meaningful way to engage with Portugal on the issue of repatriation at the moment

Overview

There have been very limited discussions on the repatriation of African belongings in Portugal.

One Member of Parliament made a proposal for the repatriation of belongings from museums in 2020, but it was rejected.

However, more recently, the Ministry of Culture has created a working group for the repatriation of objects. The group is made up of four of the directors of national museums in Portugal, but there is very little to no information about what they are working on available at the moment. Therefore there is currently no meaningful way to engage with Portugese museums on the issue of repatriation.
